Cancel Culture (Defined / Explained)

Cancel Culture is a process of social policing and community mobilization to end people, media, and things like events that people disapprove of.

It is different than person or product avoidance, or personal boycotting of something deemed to be unworthy, as Cancel Culture is not a reference to an individual canceling their personal support, but rather the attempt to get the thing itself ended / “canceled” from their livelihood or the public eye.

To be “cancelled” means to be ostracized, but can refer to firing, dis-inviting, discontinuing, or other synonyms traditionally used for the word cancel.

“Cancelling” in the Cancel Culture sense is commonly used to refer to the attempts or successes in attacking a persons livelihood (getting them fired), censoring a person or thing, or general calls for rejection of an entity because of their ideas or past behavior that allegedly can’t be forgiven.

The phrase “Cancel Culture” refers to the mindset of witch-hunting that seeks to locate and cancel in this way, people and things who have offended sensibilities that go against politically leftist doctrine.
