No, Osama Bin Laden was not “assassinated” or unjustly killed

The link to the video version of this on my Facebook page gave birth to this exchange worth publicizing:

Jonathan Rich: Actually, our side wasn’t saying “don’t do it – it won’t work.” We were saying “don’t do it because secret assassination is immoral.” Big difference. And we still aren’t wrong about that.

It’s funny that the only thing you agree with Obama on is assassination. Cute.

I [literally] don’t know what makes him think I’m down on Obama at all, let alone 99%, save for “assassination”, but this is a regular theme in his comments to me. I mock aspects of religion and display my hopeful agnosticism and he thinks I’m an Onward-Christian-Soldier variety believer; I mock and debunk some Glenn Beckisms and he thinks I’m a Glenn Beck Republican Teabagger. It’s an endless demonstration of self delusion which I admit to not fighting against because 1) why should I? If a dude can’t read words, repeating them with big denials like I’m on a witch hunting trial aint gonna make a diff and 2) I don’t hate religion or Beck or Republicans, so if someone falsely ascribes me to any of those, it’s no different than when other people assume and call me a full blown atheist or gay. It falls into the “well, you’re wrong and you’d know that if you paid attention…but…meh” category. It all fits into a larger attempt to divide and classify people you disagree with on anything as being bad people who are on an opposing team. Big running theme with this guy. Here is my response, that you’ll recognize in it’s standard “mirroring of the absurd elements of the original” format, but I think was alas, lost on the individual, unfortunately:

Richard: Actually, I didn’t say the Left said it wouldn’t work but I *did* say what you incorrectly presumed to correct me on though so maybe try paying attention and you’ll know what’s going on (it makes commenting on subject matter a lot more productive).

It would be funny that you think this is the only thing I agree with Obama on if it wasn’t so transparent and dumb. You’re too cliche to be cute when you’re wrong. Why let the facts get in the way of an awesome black-and-white view of everything though, right?

Idk what your source is that it was an assassination due to your one-way policy on providing those. Unless there’s been new developments or changes to the originally reported description of the mission – Either you have intel that no other news sources including Al Jazeera has, or you dont know what assassinations are.

I’d be interested in the answer if you were able to show accurate comprehension or memory of something you just read seconds ago, let alone however long ago you learned this news about the SEAL mission.

For those of you following at home: I will update this post if it was in fact reported that the mission was an assassination and not the “capture or kill” military operation that took place in a war with the person who started said war by declaring it on our country and beyond in the 1990s and following through with that declaration with a series of murderous attacks on our civilians through the act of war that this leader remains a fugitive from.

UPDATE: He replied with this:

Jonathan Rich: “”This was a kill operation,” the official said, making clear there was no desire to try to capture bin Laden alive in Pakistan.”

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0511/54151.html

None of which is either news, nor supportive of his claim. This dude has no desire to actually pursue truth so I’ll explain it to you after I show you what I responded to him:

Richard: text search for “assassin” yields zero results on both links. so I take it that’s your way of admitting you have no source to back up your claim and that in fact the action was the standard fare of war described in these 2 links and other reports. gotta admit you had me goin for a split second till I remembered that you got 3 things wrong about what I said on this very page, so it’s not really fair to expect anything but the same record of accuracy on wider matters.

Any killing “can” be referred to as an assassination no matter what the context in history, movies or video games, so for the word to have any meaning and for anyone to disagree about it’s usage and application, it obviously can’t mean just killing someone. So if the “same thing as killing any human” usage is out – and it clearly must be since no one thinks I’m denying the dude got killed in the raid – what is the traditional way the term is used? Answer: an unjust surprise murder for political reasons. Lincoln was assassinated. Caesar was assassinated. Malcolm X and Dr King were assassinated. JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald were assassinated. -noticing the trend here? I’ll give you a hint: none of these figures were founders and leaders of a group that their assassins were at war with.

For Bin Laden to have been “assassinated” in the sense that this dude used the term, he would have had to left his position within the group that he lead when he declared war on the United States and renounced that action and surrendered yet still shot in the face anyway…. None of that happened. Instead, all reports say Bin Laden was active in orchestrating American death and fled/resisted the troops when they raided his shithole whorehouse. Whether the conflicting reports saying the SEALS were not allowed to take him captive or whether they were just given orders to kill if necessary, is irrelevant to the accuracy of the application of the term.

When a known killers house is raided by the cops and the killer runs away into a room with guns and gets shot in the head before anything further can happen, that is not traditionally reported as an “assassination”. That’s why I would have found it interesting if any reputable news source used the word in that context and not in the sense of being parallel to “killed”.

UPDATE: He replied with 4 paragraphs that repeated the claim that “assassination = the word ‘killed'” which I’ve already dispatched with here and won’t rehash. It’s crystal clear that he did not use, or even mean to use the word as a synonym for the word “kill”, evidenced not least by the fact that I didnt dispute Bin Laden got killed..soo… if he knows I agree the dude is dead then why would he later argue “all I was saying was that he got killed and thats what assassinate means”? Because it’s easier than facing the actual wrongness of the context he meant it in, obviously. Pathetic.

UPDATE: Go O –
Obama: If I have to send troops into Pakistan again to kill a terrorist, I will

Bin Laden Death Photo

Facebook interaction went like this. Pasting instead of rehashing the same thoughts:

Jared: they got video of this entire operation. I wonder when it’ll come out. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of his own bodyguards shot him. Cause there were orders that we heard about years ago about the way he operates that said if forces were to ever get close, his bodyguards would execute him. So I really don’t believe we had some navy seals just drop in on the house & shoot him in the head.

Me: i think the most depressing news out of this is that he was alive for the past 10 years. idk bout the raid details authenticity. you hear about the guy in Pakistan who tweeted the helicopter crash a day ago? feeding conspiracy theories that this isnt week-old news and just happened shortly before it was announced, which.. sounds a lot more logical. but idk. hope they hurry and release video and dead body pics soon – not only so i have something to masturbate to, but also to help dissolve the Elvis effect thats gonna inevitably happen since he’s already been “buried at sea”. 3 dudes probably already think they saw him at 7-eleven.

Sidenote: facebook immediately threw up recommendations for 7-eleven and Elvis…

Bin Laden Dead. We Have the Body

Osama Bin Laden killed in a US attack and we have the body. It will soon be popular to nay say this or use it as a platform to attack someone or something but for now everyone should rejoice to the end of his existence.

I cant even focus on the news unraveling cuz im just waiting for the hipsters, hippies, grad students and toocool4schoolers to start mocking the [totally valid] celebration with “A’merika Fuk Ya, lol #imperialism” Photoshops and texts while they high five each other endlessly over how clever and above-it-all they are…

Update: That was fast… already on Twitter, this update comes into my feed:

Naysaying tip: “Does this eliminate the US foreign policy that caused his anger to begin with?” is the worst question to ask now, but terrible to ask at any time. It has reminded me however that that specious line of argument even exists though. I can’t caution enough against the moral depravity and intellectual foolishness in falling into the “it’s our fault they murder us” trap. Asking “what made him angry with us” enough to order the murder of all Americans in any country is disgusting. When you have a Hitler, a Stalin, a Bin Laden, a Saddam or a KKK lynch mob on your hands, you are a fool to take their murders as legit responses to government policies. The standpoint of asking “why are they angry with us” has no shred of merit.

Update: President Obama’s Address to the Nation about this is excellent. Watching it as I type and he’s nailing it. From facial expression to speech delivery – he GOT this.

Update: He’s doing his trademark “i” disease and ruining it… making it all about him… c’mon dude. show a little class and talk about the intelligence, military – earn unassailable points from your opposition and supporters alike by dropping a shoutout to your predecessor perhaps (Update: Obama mentioned that G.W. Bush said, as Obama is reiterating now, that we’re not at war with Islam) – less of this “i” and “me” and “under my direction”. It’s tacky. You’re addressing a democracy, not subjects in a dictatorship. This is a Presidential Address, not a blog…

Interesting notice from @NewYorkObserver on twitter: Look at Obama’s face when Seth Meyers made joke about Bin Laden last night:

Best reactions on Twitter:

@buckhollywood Worst Timing Ever: @LadyGaga- Are monsters ready for me to announce the premiere of The Judas Video? The Motorcycle Fellini Pop Art Fantasy?!

@BillyHallowell I’d argue Bin Laden was already dead inside before this happened, but now…it’s official.

@jpuopolo: CIA finally unlocked the Killed Bin Laden Badge! They have been working on that one for years!

Update: Fox News is playing footage of large crowds in the streets of DC changing USA and waving flags in celebration and I admit that the hipster in me is compelled to naysay it too..but…logically, I find no way to. If you agree mass murderers are evil, then you agree that their deaths are celebratory events…so… fuck ya, USA.

“Palins Alaska” is a Reality Show. Apologize

I’m thinking of making this a regular feature. another one that comes to mind is Palins reality show. liberals mocked her for coming out with one and camp Palin called it a type of documentary and conservatives went all BOOYA in the libs face – except, then the show premiered… and its a friggin reality show. line for line. by definition in format, appearance and film structure: its a REALITY SHOW. Apologize.

Birth Certificate Apologies

Now that President Obama has released his birth certificate, I demand apologies from the people on both sides who spread lies, intentional or otherwise. APOLOGIZE…

FROM ANTI-BIRTHERS: You were wrong. The stock response to anyone who dared to mention the fact that the birth certificate had until now remained hidden, was a false claim that “he [President Obama] HAS [released it]”. Even when anti-birthers like myself would observe that the document released was in fact not a birth certificate and did not prove anything on this issue in the context of still mentioning that the conspiracy theory is ridiculous and wholly without merit – you people still smeared us as being birther-nuts and kept falsely saying the birth certificate was already released. You were wrong. It was just now released. Apologize. It is not okay to spread lies just because the other side is peddling a theory based on lies. You fight lies with TRUTH. not more lies. APOLOGIZE.

FROM BIRTHERS: You were wrong. I’m not going to waste time in dissecting exactly why it is insanely stupid to hold the belief that Barack Obama’s mother who was living in Hawaii whilst pregnant, flew via 1960s air travel all the way to Kenya to have her baby and for some reason have someone plant a false newspaper birth announcement back in her Hawaiian hometown newspaper (and for what gain or motive?). Instead lets just stick to the obvious: you said the birth certificate would show he was born in Africa. here it is… it doesn’t say that. You were wrong. APOLOGIZE.

Top birther Jerome Corsi’s book will be released on May 17, 2011 (this is not a joke):

You were wrong. You invested a lot of money into something you will not get back unless you continue to scam people with claims that “the book is more relevant now, than ever”. Don’t do that. Escape with a shred of dignity and admit you were wrong and eat the losses on the book.

APOLOGIZE….

Equally annoying are the people who drove this as a news story, almost entirely for partisan reasons. MSNBC covered it extensively with full segments, back to back while I never saw anything about it on Fox except in single question form by a host or comment by guest to dismiss how dumb it is. Still though, it wasn’t that big a deal in relation to everything else across the board anywhere. Contrary to the Presidents claim, the Birther controversy was 4% of newshole, not ‘dominant’ story.

An analysis of cable news coverage shows that 19 percent of the cable news airtime studied focused on the 2012 election last week. Mark Jurkowitz, Associate Director of PEJ, provides this breakdown of the coverage by cable network:

MSNBC
including “The Ed Show,” “Hardball,” “The Last Word,” and “The Rachel Maddow Show”

  • 28% of airtime studied was devoted to the 2012 election
  • 10% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama
  • A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 92% of the Obama coverage

Fox
including “Special Report w/Bret Baier,” “Fox Report w/Shepard Smith,” “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Hannity”

  • 16% of airtime studied was devoted to 2012 election
  • 5% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama
  • A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 8% of the Obama coverage

CNN
including “The Situation Room,” “John King, USA,” “In The Arena,” and “Anderson Cooper 360?

  • 11% of airtime studied was devoted to 2012 election
  • 5% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama
  • A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 100% of the Obama coverage.

Jurkowitz says MSNBC consistently devotes more of its airtime to politics, based on PEJ’s research, while CNN generally spends the least amount of time on politics of the three cable networks.

While MSNBC’s coverage may have been devoted to questioning or debunking the president’s citizenship issues, that network spent the most time discussing it.

Donald Trumps reaction was to tell everyone “you’re welcome”, taking full credit for the release. This is…valid. His headline making on the issue indeed is probably what changed it from a useful tool for the Administration to use to make Republicans look like crazy morons into an actual detriment that they needed to clean up before it made them look worse. Still though: he has to cop to the fact that his hunch was wrong, his “research project in Hawaii” never actually existed, and just on the plain old facts, he lost on this. Admit it already…

Research Saves

Not a hard choice. The rat is cute and that is it’s entire worth to the world. The girl has more to offer, even if you don’t believe in an inherent or divinely given worth to humans.

It’s not all lab rats of course. There is testing on beagles and chimps and other mammals. But if it saves human lives, there is no argument.

You want passion and truth? Okay. Teller and I would personally kill EVERY chimp in the world, with our bare hands, to save ONE street junkie…with AIDS.

Fox Morning Show pranks co-host with iPad licking app

On the surface, this is an amusing April Fools gag on a Fox morning news show in San Diego with a cute reaction and blah blah blah – but my deeper interest is how awesome and casual Fox morning shows in San Diego are. We have Good Day LA I guess, which has the same light and bouncy air to it but still – I was more impressed by the anchor smoothly sniffing his phone and saying “ya dude” than with the actual content. An extra nice touch: The Fox 5 logo turning into Fox 69 during the segment.
